Dogs may bark because they are bored and are craving mental and physical stimulation. It's the owners responsibility to make sure the animal is getting the appropriate exercise and attention it needs. So, maybe it's time to take him for a walk or a ride in the car to get them to stop barking. If you react to them by screaming, they may stop temporarily, but you're only putting a band aid on the problem.
Some breeds of dogs bark more than others. For example, hounds and herding dogs like Shelties bark quite often, because of the jobs these breeds were bred to do. So, if you have one of these dogs, just remember, it's in their genes.

Separation anxiety can be another reason why your dog barks. Dogs are pack animals and when you leave them home they feel separated from there pack and will usually bark excessively until you return home.
What ever you do, don't reward your dog when you come home, because he will associate his barking with your returning home and think that his excessive barking caused you to come home. What you should do is try and ignore your pet until they have settled down, then you can give them the attention they want.
While having your dog barking when strangers come near your home is a good barking behavior. It becomes specifically difficult to stop dog barking when the delivery person or mailman come to your house, because the dog is guaranteed to get rewarded every time they show up. Your delivery person comes, your dog barks, the delivery person leaves. This is a very difficult cycle to break, but not impossible, it just takes some due diligence.
These are just a few of the reasons why dogs may bark. It can be an annoying problem and definitely an important one to fix, but It's good to keep in mind that some dog barking is warranted. Dog barking can be a healthy way for any dog to express themselves. They just need to learn when it's appropriate and when it's not.
