Chewing is one of those things that happens to come naturally for dogs. They like to chew just about anything because it's natural for them to try and sharpen their teeth and improve their chewing skills. If you're working with a dog that chews, it's a good idea to have them constrained in a small room for a couple weeks, so they can become acclimated with the new house. This is critical, not only to stop dog from chewing, but to effectively home train the canine as well.
The area that you designate for the animal should have his essential chewing toys. This will keep him amused when he is left alone for long periods of time. He should have a quality warm place to sleep and a bowl of food and water to sustain him for short periods of time.
When the time comes for your dog to get free rain of the house, make sure to remove any items off the floor that you don't want chewed up, like your shoes, bags, anything of importance. If you forget to do this, then don't be surprised to come home and see these items chewed up. To help prevent this, the dog must be assured that you will make a quick return, so don't leave them alone for more that a few hours at a time until they are reassured that you will be coming home.
To stop dog from chewing when you leave for periods of time, make sure you stagger times that you leave throughout the day. Its best if you can schedule this at first, then slowly lengthen the time until they become less and less anxious every time you leave the house. Eventually, your dog anxiety issues will dissipate and your dog will stop its bad chewing behavior for good.
